Diesel Electric Locomotive of 2100HP-EGM

manufactured in cooperation with GENERAL MOTORS-USA

DE 621 EGM Locomotive

1. General

Diesel electric locomotive, the locomotive highest series manufactured by Electroputere Craiova and which are still in operation on Romanian railways and in Poland, Bulgaria and Chine too is that one of 2100 HP of 060-DA type. This type of locomotive was manufactured based on a licence provided by Swiss Consortium formed up of SLM, SULZER and BROWN-BOVERI.

The locomotive power source is a Diesel engine 12 LDE 28-SULZER type with 12 cylinders providing 2100 HP and which is mechanically coupled to the D.C. main generator. On the main generator shaft it is provided the D.C. auxiliary generator that is to supply the auxiliary services. The D.C. axle half-suspended traction motors are of GDTM type manufactured by Electroputere.

Although Diesel engine of 12 LDA 28 type proved to be a solid and reliable engine for Romanian Railways Administration operating conditions, however, for the time being, it is exceeded by other Diesel engines utilized in railway vehicles domain as concerns the fuel, oil specific consumption and also its specific weight. Also, the locomotive is not provided with train electric heating unit and that means a big disadvantage compared to other modern locomotives.

Having in view Electroputere concerns the modernization of this type of locomotives, SNCFR drew up a Specifications presenting the general technical requests this modernization activity was to correspond to.

Therefore, the changes which LDE 2100 HP locomotive was to be subjected to on the occasion of its overhaul repair aimed:

  • Replace of Diesel-generator group formed up of 12 LDA 28 Diesel engine type and DC generator already existing, by a Diesel engine of 8-710G3A - GENERAL MOTORS - EMD type, the afferent cooling, lubricating and control installations inclusively and a AR8-HE4-CA6A type generator, three-phase rectifier and a force electric equipment specially designed for AC/DC transmission having the same supplier.

  • Locomotive equipping with train heating unit.

  • Driving cabs equipping with air conditioned unit.

  • Locomotive equipping with diagnosis unit.

  • Keeping of the existing bogie, traction motor was modernized.

    3. LDE 2100 HP Locomotive Modernization by Endowing with GENERAL MOTORS Equipment

On the occasion of the overhaul repair performed by Electroputere Craiova, V.F.U. Division for LDE 2100 HP locomotive the following modernizing works are performed:

    3.1. Locomotive Body

The locomotive body is changed for allowing Diesel engine, main generator and the new traction system afferent installations mountage.

Main locomotive body changes mainly refer to:

    • Changes of the underframe in Diesel-generator group area.

    • Changes of the floor sheet and its supports.

    • Changes of the cables channels.

    • Changes of the cooling group area.

    • Changes of the traction motor ventilating ducts.

    • Changes of the covers and the roof.

    • Changing of the driving cabs.

    • Mountage of the train electric heating sockets at frontal part.

    • Introducing of Diesel engine room pressurizing and air filtering system.

    • Changing of the cover in Diesel engine noise absorber area.

    • Providing of partitions in Diesel engine room.

    • Changes of the doors and windows arrangement.

    3.2. Bogies

The locomotive is provided with LDE 2100 HP - CFR bogies and the following changes and arrangements are to be performed to:

    • Changes of the axle ends 1, 3,4 and 6 for being mounted earth contacts for the train electric heating current return.

    • Providing of tooth crowns and pinions for 120 km/h. speed and a new solution f

    3.3. Arrangements

Driving cabs arrangement is changed for being increased the locomotive driver comfort during his activity:

    • Providing of an additional sound proof system.

    • Providing of the driving cabs with a modern driving desk where there is arranged the whole locomotive driving and monitoring system.

    • Equipping with air conditioned units in both cabs.

    • Replace of the actual driver's chair by a new and comfortable and reliable one.

    • Providing of sun shades.

    • Providing of back-looking mirrors.

    • Arrangement of a driving cab electric heating system and of front windows desteaming system.

    • Equipping with a non-volatile memory speed measuring and registering installation.

    • Equipping with a refrigerator and a heating plate.

    3.4. Thermal Installation

The oversupplied 8-710G3A type Diesel engine supplied by GENERAL MOTORS-EMD has the following technical characteristics:

    • Number and arrangement of cylinders: 8; 45 VEE

    • Diameter of bore/stroke: 230.1 mm / 279.4 mm

    • Type of cycle: 2 times, Diesel

    • Compression ration: 16:1

    • Locomotive rates power in UIC conditions: 2100 HP

    • Rated speed: 904±4 rpm.

    • No-load speed: 200±4 rpm.

    • Fuel specific consumption:153 gr/HPh.

    • Oil consumption: 0.5% of the fuel consumption.

    • Turbo-blower: "G" type, of GM-EMD manufacture

    • Speed regulator: an electro-hydraulic one of PGE WOODWARD type

    • Starting system: mattery supplied electric starter

    • Dry engine weight:11.5 t?1%

    • Driven auxiliaries:

      • oil pump

      • water pump

      • main generator fan

      • 1, 2, 3 and 4 traction motors fan

      • compressor

      • auxiliary generators

Diesel engine cooling is got by treated water which is recirculated in a closed and pressurized circuit by a pump provided on Diesel engine. Water cooling is made by a group of radiators by means of which heat is dissipated by a fan discharged air.

Diesel engine lubricating oil is recirculated in a closed under pressure circuit by two pumps provided on it. When getting the lubricating oil pressure minimum value, the hydraulic detecting unit in the load regulator performs Diesel engine stop.

The fuel is absorbed from the main reservoir by an electrical fuel pump. From the injecting nozzles, the fuel performs its return travel to the reservoir by an one-way valve which is to provide these ones oversupply necessary overpressure.

The locomotive is provided by a Diesel engine preheating system which is made up of an electric heating unit, a water circulating pump and an oil circulating pump, all supplied by a three-phase outside source.

The pneumatic compressor cooling water is provided by Diesel engine cooling circuit.
